Parent Letter 08-11-09

posted Aug 11, 2009 12:58 PM by Jon Meissner

August 11, 2009

Welcome back!!  This letter will begin our weekly communication with you via email.

As Gateway begins its 27th year we continue to hold hope and vision for students who need to ‘learn how to learn.’  Often students, despite good traditional teaching, need deliberate teaching in these areas:

Ÿ     how to unlock the code of reading

Ÿ     how to  comprehend what is read

Ÿ     can read well but their writing skills do not reflect their intelligence

Ÿ     know what to do but lack of organization continues to defeat them

Ÿ     interpersonal and social skills

Ÿ     how to spell, not memorize spelling words

Ÿ     time to process

Gateway provides the individual, intensive teaching and training each student needs. Its program is designed with each student in mind, teaching to the intellect while considering the student’s needs and strengths.  When students have ‘learned how to learn’ they are able to return to their school of choice with confidence and success.

Former Gateway students have gone on to graduate high school, trade school and college.  They are successful, responsible citizens as employees, private business owners, youth workers, military personnel, teachers, and parents in our community and elsewhere.  Time after time they return to tell us of their successes and to thank our teachers.

As you register your student please be advised your student’s class placement is carefully considered as to reading level and area of need and strength. Your child may have progressed more rapidly in reading due to daily practice during the summer, or the reading level may have declined due to less practice.  Often students will stay with a teacher more than one year as they develop those critical skills needed for success.

We look forward to working with you and your student.  There is nothing more gratifying to our teachers than to see hurdles conquered and success happen.

Gateway Staff

Gateway—Returning to Students the Joy of Learning

THIS WEEK:

Ÿ     Monday and Tuesday, August 10 and 11 are registration days for the new school year.  We will be accepting registrations from 8a.m.-4p.m.  You will need to bring updated immunization records in order to register.  You may download the registration packet from the web site at www.gatewayschoolak.com and bring the completed forms with you to registration or pick up a packet from the office.  Please allow yourself plenty of time to complete the registration packet.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Ÿ     Best of Anchorage Award:  Gateway School and Learning Center was selected for the 2009 Best of Anchorage Award in the Private Elementary School category by the U.S. Commerce Association (USCA).  We have posted the press release on our web site www.gatewayschoolak.com

Ÿ     Immunization Requirements:  The State of Alaska has new school immunization requirements effective July 1, 2009.  Please review the changes below and visit your child’s heath care provider to ensure compliance.  All Gateway School and Learning Center students must have medically-verified documentation of current and updated immunizations and PPD testing prior to enrollment.  The current tuberculin skin test requirements (PPD) remain unchanged.

Varicella (Chickenpox) Vaccination

o    Alaska law now requires students K-6 to have 2 valid doses of Varicella OR

o    documented medical exemption/history of the disease recorded on the new state Medical Exemption & Disease History Form.  This form “must be signed by an Alaska-licensed MD, DO, ANP, or PA, stating the child is exempt.”

Tdap Vaccination

o    Alaska law now requires students K-12 to have a Tdap booster due within 10 years of the last Td vaccination.

Tuberculin Skin Testing

o    Alaska law (7 AAC 27.213) requires administration of a tuberculin skin testing (PPD) within 90 days of enrollment for all students entering kindergarten and 7th grade or students new to our school for the first time.

For more immunization information, parents may talk with a family doctor.  You are also invited to view the 2009-2010 School Year Alaska Child Care & School Requirement Changes document at http://www.epi.hss.state.ak.us or call the Alaska Immunization Helpline at 888-430-4321 or 269-8088 in Anchorage for details.

Ÿ     H1N1 Flu:  Gateway wants to encourage our families to be prepared for a possible H1N1 influenza outbreak this fall.  Flu-like symptoms are fever, sore throat, aching muscles, cough, runny or stuffy nose, headache, fatigue and possibly vomiting and diarrhea.  The flu has the ability to spread from person-to-person through the cough or sneeze of people with the virus or by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching your mouth or nose.  Those with flu-like symptoms should stay home.  There are several things that health officials recommend you can do to prevent the spread of the flu:

Ÿ  Cover your sneeze or cough with a tissue, elbow or sleeve.  Discard tissues after use.

Ÿ  Wash your hands with soap and water, especially after you sneeze or cough.

Ÿ  Do not touch your hands to your eyes, nose or mouth.

Ÿ  Try to avoid close contact with those who display flu-like symptoms.

Ÿ  If you do become ill, stay home and limit contact with others.

Updates on the swine flu outbreak are available on the Center for Disease control Web site, www.cdc.gov/flu/swine/. Officials with the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services encourage all Alaskans to take this opportunity to review the information on the state’s preparedness web site, www.hss.state.ak.us/prepared/pandemic.htm.

Alaska has first swine flu fatality.

Summer vacation is just around the corner!  What a year of growth it has been.  Your children have brought happiness to each day, week and month.

Thank you for giving us the privilege of working with your child throughout the year.  We, the staff, at Gateway have been enriched and rewarded.  We are well aware that this year has taken great sacrifice, devotion and dedication.  You and your child will continue to reap the rewards of your care.  May your family have a wonderful summer.  Get out and play together.  As Mr. Rogers would remind us:  "Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning, but for children play is serious learning - play is really the work of childhood."

 THIS WEEK:

 *         TOMORROW:  Wednesday, Mrs. Tillman's Zoo Field trip 11:15-2:45 PM

*         FRIDAY:  School Family Picnic at Gateway! 10 AM - 2 PM.

PLEASE NOTE:  Students are NOT to come to school until 10 a.m. on that day.  Parents who have signed up to help with games will be contacted by the student council of their duties. Food assignments were sent home yesterday.  The office must know today how many of your family members are coming to the picnic.

UPCOMING EVENTS/OPPORTUNITIES:

 *         Keep a lookout in your mail box; the office will be mailing the fourth quarter report cards and SAT scores the first week of June.

Please note:  Should you have an outstanding tuition balance, report cards, test scores and requests to forward transcripts and records will be withheld until balance is paid in full.

*         Did you buy a yearbook?  If you didn't, you may purchase one at the picnic. Cost is $23.00.

 *         SUMMER SCHOOL is right around the corner--June 1 - 19, 9am -

12 noon.  Flyers have been sent home.  Please remember to post at your church, favorite coffee spot, workplace and neighborhood.  This is a great way to help parents find the help they need for their child.  You may want your child to come to summer school also.  Please sign up with the office.  Teachers will call you if they recommend summer school for your child.

 *         There are to be no electronics allowed in sight at school. This includes the last day of school, as well.  If taken away, parents will need to pick up in the office.

 *         Students are not allowed to use vending machines on campus.

 *         Tutoring slots are still available for June. Sign up today.

 *         FYI:  The first day of school for the new year 2009-2010 is

Wednesday, August 19, 2009.  This date coincides with the Anchorage School District calendar.

 *         Heads up to ALL Parents:

The state of Alaska is requiring all children through grade six to have the Varicella vaccination by July 1st.  Varicella is commonly referred to as chickenpox.  **Students in grades K-6 are required to have two doses of the Varicella vaccination.  Students who have had chickenpox must present a medical record that is medically verified, meaning that only signatures of a professional MD/DO/ANP or PA, along with a date, will be accepted as proof of the disease.  For more immunization information, parents may talk with a family doctor or call the Alaska Immunization Program helpline at 269-8000.

IT IS TIME TO SAY GOODBYE TO MR. KRAMER AND MR. METHE:

Parents and Guardians of Gateway School:

After prayerful consideration I have decided to resign my position at Gateway School at the end of this school year.  It has been a wonderful experience for me and I thank you for the opportunity to work with such great children.

I have learned that I wish to make a career out of teaching.  However, to make that possible, it has become evident to me that I need to concentrate on my graduate program and credentialing over the next year and will therefore be unable to continue in my present position.  I wish God's blessings upon you as you continue to influence and mold the students of this school.

Thank you again for the opportunity to play a small part in shaping the lives of your children.  Gateway's staff and families will always have a place in my heart.

Sincerely,

David Kramer

Dear Parents,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and the Administration here at Gateway for the opportunity to teach American History to your high school students this past quarter.

My time spent in their classroom has been incredibly enjoyable; I have certainly learned as much as I have taught.  Your teenagers are energetic, highly inquisitive, and, in my opinion, well mannered.  They each have, within themselves, the capacity for success and achievement.

Although the Administration at Gateway has graciously invited me to continue teaching in the 2009-2010 school year, I find myself unable to seize such an incredible opportunity.  After much prayer both by myself and by others on my behalf, I feel led to return to my childhood home where I will be closer to my family, most of all my young son, and able to pursue a Master's degree program.

I would like to wish all of my junior historians the best as they complete these formative years and to encourage them to continue to the higher education, of which I am certain they will attain.

 Sincerely,

Shannon Methe

ADDENDUM:  However, the rest of us will still be here:  Amanda McClure, Wendy Liesener, Janet Tillman, Karen White, Jim Anderson, Jon Miessner, Doris Cerny, Marilyn Anderson, Jane Garrard, Michelle Reger, Richard Anderson and Kathy Lyday.  We are actively interviewing some very qualified applicants to replace Rachel!

Please read this wonderful article from Jim Fay of Love and Logic:

 If I Were King

If I were king, I'd insist that we take a new look at the role of homework for elementary-aged children.

There are many different ways to learn. Pencil and paper activities are good ways to learn, but only one of many different ways.

If I were king, paper and pencil worksheets would cease at the end of the school day for kids in elementary school. Other forms of learning would take over, except in cases where a child does them on a voluntary basis.

As king, I would encourage parents to ask teachers for ideas about how kids can learn in different fun ways with their parents. I bet the teachers would suggest all kinds of learning activities that support the work done at school. Homework might include activities such as:

 Reading to each other

Games that require math skills

Exploring the neighborhood for examples of nature and science

 Card games and board games

 Electronic games

 Researching on the Internet

 Measuring and weighing while cooking

Finding the best bargain in the grocery store

 Spelling games

Calculating gas mileage, win/loss averages for favorite sports, time and distance, etc.

This list could go on and on.

All of you have favorite learning games and activities. I invite you to share these ideas. We will compile a list to distribute at a later date.

Email your contributions to maggiey@loveandlogic.com <mailto:maggiey@loveandlogic.com?subject=If%20I%20Were%20King> .

Why do I ask for you to contribute to this list? Research, including Dr.

Harris Cooper's study of 700 young students, indicates that the more written assignments students did the more negative their attitudes became about school.

Let's put the joy back into learning.

Thanks for reading,

Jim Fay

 Dear Gateway Parents and Students,

It is with mixed emotions that I write this letter to you. For the last three years I have had the privilege of working with your students at Gateway. I never expected to end up in a school like Gateway where each student is so valued and their individual learning is such a high priority. I have truly loved my time in Alaska and at Gateway. However, this year I was offered the opportunity to continue my own education with a master's degree in Dyslexia Education and potentially a Ph.D. in Language and Literacy from Middle Tennessee State University outside of Nashville. Receiving a master's degree has been a goal of mine for several years now and it is an opportunity I cannot pass up. If there is one thing I have learned in the last three years it is that I really know so very little about teaching students with dyslexia. I am so excited for this opportunity.

However, with this new adventure ahead of me it is extremely difficult to say goodbye to you and your children. I count it the highest of honors to have had the privilege of teaching them and will have an extremely hard time saying goodbye. Change is always difficult and the past few years at Gateway have been full of it. However, life is full of change and uncertainty. We tend to view these changes as a negative thing, but already so many positive things have come from the changes at Gateway. I'm sure that whoever is hired will be equally qualified to continue your student's education. New ideas and methods are always a welcome addition to any classroom.

So, with heartfelt gratitude for your support through the last 3 years of my life, I say goodbye. I thank you for entrusting your students to me over the last few years of their lives. I hope that in the future our paths may cross again and I look forward to hearing the amazing stories of what your students have accomplished. Please keep in touch. I would love to know what each student is doing and how they are succeeding.

Sincerely,

Rachel Anderberg

Please read this wonderful article from Charles Fey of Love and Logic:

 Everything Rests on Relationships

What makes Love and Logic work? Some believe it's our strong emphasis on setting limits. They think that folks who are struggling with their kids just aren't setting enough limits. Others believe that the power of Love and Logic has more to do with providing consequences for misbehavior.

They think that those who're unsuccessful with kids just need to do a better job of providing bigger and more powerful consequences.

Both of these viewpoints are right.and also wrong. Limits are critical, but we'll never make them stick if we don't have good relationships with our kids. Holding youngsters accountable for their misbehavior is also essential, but have you noticed that kids just don't seem to care that much about consequences when they come from someone they don't love and respect?

Everything rests on relationships. Limits gain their power from them, and so do consequences. So, if we want Love and Logic to have its full power, we're wise to do plenty of the following:

Focus mostly on our children's strengths rather than their weaknesses.

Smile at them as often as possible.

Write them little notes that tell them how much we adore them.

Greet them each day with a hug or a high five.

Make sure that they overhear us talking about how much we love them.

Deliver our Love and Logic with great empathy and sincerity.

 Thanks for reading!

Please read this wonderful article from Jim Fay of Love and Logic:

Is Your Family a Team?

Please tell me this doesn't happen in your family.

Following our recent blizzard, the service and product providers known as fathers were out trying to clear the walks and driveways. There was not a kid to be seen anywhere.

I commented to a neighbor that in the past, kids would be out with their shovels helping clear the snow. After that they would be off shoveling walks to earn money.

"Is that where your kids are?" I asked.

"No," he answered. "Kids today aren't that motivated."

He blames today's kids. Little does he know that parents are the ones who train kids to believe they are honored guests in the home, rather than contributing members of a family team.

Many tasks, like snow removal or yard work, are family jobs where kids can and should become part of the team. Kids should be helping in any way that is appropriate for their age. Even small kids can help prepare drinks or snacks to serve the ones who are doing the hard work. The last thing I want to see is a kid sleeping in or playing video games while their parents do these jobs alone.
